Convenient Access from Independence Heights
One straight road does most of the work between Independence Heights and SMYL Dentistry: Yale St, which runs south across Loop 610 toward our Houston office, about 9 minutes away. For anyone choosing a dentist near Independence Heights, that makes regular care easy to keep up with. Our two dentists handle cleanings, root canals, extractions, jaw pain and cosmetic work, and new patients have free and low-cost ways to start.
Booker T. Washington High School on Yale St is a good starting point, and from there the drive is 3.7 miles, roughly 9 minutes. Follow Yale St south for about 2.4 miles, over Loop 610 and into the Heights, then turn west on W 11th St. Work south on Ashland St, W 8th St and Waverly St, and finish west on W 6th St at N Shepherd Dr. Our door is at 600 N Shepherd Dr Ste. 164, Houston, TX 77007, on the east side of Shepherd.
Two neighbors sit along the way. Garden Oaks lies just to the west of Independence Heights, and the second half of this drive runs through The Heights on its way to our corner.
Honoring the Independence Heights Story
Few Houston neighborhoods carry a history like this one. Black families began settling here around 1908 on land developed by the Wright Land Company, and in 1915 Independence Heights incorporated as the first African American municipality in Texas. George O. Burgess served as its first mayor, and the young town paved its streets with shell and installed its own water system.
By the late 1920s, about 40 Black-owned businesses operated in town. Residents voted to dissolve the municipality in 1928, and Houston annexed Independence Heights in 1929. Burgess Hall on E. 34th St. served as the town's city hall and courthouse until 1919.
Recognition followed. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker in 1989, and the Independence Heights Residential Historic District joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Many of its small wood-frame houses from the 1900s and 1910s were built by Black contractors who lived in the community.
Practical Dental Advice for Independence Heights Families
Independence Heights is a family-centered community with its own high school, and many households juggle school and work. Dental visits need to be easy to plan and easy to afford. A cleaning every six months, with x-rays when needed, catches decay while it is still small and inexpensive to fix.
Cost should never be the reason someone skips the dentist. New patients can book a Free Limited Exam & X-Ray when one tooth is causing trouble. Uninsured new patients without gum disease qualify for the $79 Cleaning, Exam & X-Ray, and the SMYL Club bundles a full year of preventive care for one annual payment.
Some problems show up as pain rather than a visible cavity. A clenched or sore jaw can point to TMD, and a throbbing tooth may need a root canal to save it. Our dentists explain what they find in plain language, and the practice never upsells: you decide what happens next.
Timing helps too. Tuesday and Thursday appointments begin at 7:00 AM and end by 4:00 PM, while Mondays and Wednesdays run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. An early slot lets a parent finish a cleaning before the workday or the school bell.
The community lies in Harris County north of Loop 610 and west of I-45, bounded by W Tidwell Rd, Yale St, the Loop and Airline Dr, with Acres Homes farther north. Houston ISD's Burrus Elementary, Williams or Hamilton Middle and Booker T. Washington High serve its students.
Independence Heights Park on E. 35th St. and McCullough Park on E. 40th St. serve as neighborhood green spaces, and McCullough Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The City's Independence Heights Super Neighborhood page shares more of the area's history.

What Patients Say
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is SMYL Dentistry from Independence Heights, and how do I get there?
Our office is 3.7 miles from Booker T. Washington High School, or about 9 minutes by car. Most of the drive is Yale St south across Loop 610, followed by W 11th St and W 6th St through the Heights. For families wanting a dentist near Independence Heights, that mostly straight drive keeps the trip simple.
Can I watch TV during my appointment?
Yes. Our treatment rooms have ceiling-mounted TVs, so you can lean back and watch a favorite Netflix show while the team works. Many patients find it takes their mind off the sounds of dental care. If you need more help relaxing, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are also available.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
An exam and an x-ray are the only sure way to know. Common warning signs include a throbbing ache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling near a tooth or a tooth that has darkened. Our dentists use digital x-rays to see how far decay or infection has reached, then explain whether a root canal can save the tooth.
Do you treat jaw pain from TMD?
Yes, TMD treatment is one of our services. Jaw pain, clicking, trouble opening wide or frequent headaches can all be linked to the jaw joint and the way your teeth meet. Our dentists start with an exam of your bite and jaw, then explain the treatment options that fit your symptoms.
Does the Loop 610 crossing add time to an early appointment?
Yes, it can at rush hour. The Yale St crossing of Loop 610 is the busiest point on the drive, so leave a few minutes earlier than the usual 9-minute trip for a 7:00 AM Tuesday or Thursday visit. Once you are south of the Loop, the rest of the route runs on Heights streets.
